I’m looking to purchase some syringe filters to TDS espresso, but I’m not sure I want to spend the money on the package available on VST. Are there other alternatives in smaller quantities I could purchase?

Check “syringe filter 0.45” on ebay, aliexpress… 
(or 0.22 for even more filtration)
