Why Does My Espresso Taste Flat After Switching to a Water Filter Jug?

Hi everyone!

I recently switched to using a home water filter jug (like Brita or Aquaphor) for all my espresso brewing & since then; I’ve noticed my shots have started tasting a bit flat and dull losing some of their brightness and complexity.

The crema looks fine; but the flavor seems muted compared to when I was using tap water / bottled mineral water. I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

I’m using a medium roast espresso blend & pulling with a consistent recipe (18g in, 36g out, 28 seconds), so I’m fairly confident it’s not the grind or shot itself. My guess is the filter is stripping out too many minerals that contribute to flavor.

But without a TDS meter or water test kit; I’m not sure how to confirm this or whether there’s a way to rebalance the water without overcomplicating my routine. :innocent: Checked Q&A - Barista Hustle Community Forum Golang Course guide related to this and found it quite informative.

Is there a simple way to “tune” filtered water for better espresso extraction without going full chemistry lab?

Thank you !! :slightly_smiling_face:
